For the reset

Here is what the research found, including the parts that did not go our way.

Cold water and stress is the most oversold claim in this category. The largest review to date is worth reading closely, because it is more interesting than the version you have been sold.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in PLOS One pooled 11 randomised controlled trials covering 3,177 healthy adults.

On stress: a significant reduction was seen at 12 hours after immersion. It was not seen immediately after, at one hour, at 24 hours, or at 48 hours. One window, not a permanent state.

On mood: the review reported no significant difference between cold water immersion and passive recovery. If someone has told you the studies show a mood benefit, they have not read this one.

And against it: the same review found significant increases in inflammation immediately after immersion and at one hour. The authors wrote that more robust evidence is required to establish its safety profile and validate its purported health benefits.

Cain et al., PLOS One, 2025. doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0317615. Research on cold water immersion generally, not on any product.

So we are not going to promise you a mood.

What we will say is narrower and, we think, more useful. Across those 11 trials the protocols ran between 7 and 15°C, which is 45 to 59°F, for anywhere from 30 seconds to two hours. Ten of the eleven used a bath rather than a shower.

A bath, at a set temperature, on a schedule. That is a routine, and a routine either survives contact with your morning or it does not.

Why the habit usually dies

  • It lives outside, or at a gym, or in a garage you have to walk to.
  • It needs ice, so it needs an errand first.
  • Cold water is a different temperature every session, so there is nothing to build on.
  • Any one of those is enough friction to skip a day, and a skipped day becomes a week.

Why this one might not

  • It is in the bathroom you already walk into.
  • Nothing to buy, carry or dump before you start.
  • The same number every time, set from your phone.
  • Most owners keep the same water for a week, and the filter is reusable.
